Your Patagonia Guide Team and Hosts
For the Patagonia Packraft Expedition, we partner with Paddle Patagonia. Makes sense right?
The outfitter is owned and operated by Julian Tisato and Katie Hambly. They run mountain biking and whitewater trips across Argentina and Chile. Based in El Bolson, they’re the on-the-ground local super experts that not only make this trip possible—they make it incredible!
You want an adventure travel vacation of a lifetime. Paddle Patagonia’s amazing network of professional guides and logistics staff deliver. Katie and Julian’s attention to detail is impeccable. They love the region, and they’re passionate about sharing it, and teaching travelers everything from local history to wilderness skills.
All of this leads to an experience for you that isn’t only smooth and safe, but fulfilling and unforgettable!
A perfect pair
We at Boreal River have oodles of experience running remote river expeditions worldwide. Paddle Patagonia has incredible local knowledge, relationships, and operational prowess. Together we make a great pair.
Note: We’re also not too shabby at pairing incredible river adventures with just the right Malbec 🙂 But let’s be honest – any Malbec tastes good when you’re sitting by a crackling fire, beneath snow-capped mountains, by a turquoise river, after a day where you didn’t just run the rapids, you styled them.
Learn from expert guides
Julian Tisato, owner of Paddle Patagonia, will personally lead this trip.
When you spend time on the river with Julian, you can’t help but catch some of his infectious energy, not to mention, grow your skills.
He’s as passionate about kayaking as the day he first made it down the mighty Futaleufu when he was barely old enough to drink mate (pronounced mah-tay, a strong South American tea). Just kidding – toddlers drink mate in Patagonia so he was a bit older than that. The point is, Julian loves kayaking and adventure and he can’t wait to share this part of the world with you.
Julian was born and raised in El Bolson where his childhood ‘scout’ excursions featured trips in their backyard hills (the Andes!). He cut his teeth kayaking on South America’s mightiest waterways and has spent numerous seasons guiding internationally on some of the world’s greatest rivers:
- Futa in Chile
- Ottawa in Ontario
- Magpie in Quebec
- Grand Canyon of the Colorado
- Zambezi in Africa
- Elaho in British Columbia
- Pacuare in Costa Rica
And these are just the rivers where he’s worked as a professional guide…you’ll have to ask him about his personal kayaking adventures around the fire some night.
Julian has been working with Boreal River since 2012. He’s among the most experienced, innovative, and prolific whitewater rescue instructors in the world. He just got back from a series of courses in Uganda teaching local raft guides, and has led our trips on the Magpie.
Most importantly though—Julian is friendly and caring (and as an Argentine, not bad at Tango).
Julian leads a team of professional local guides who won’t just show you technical skills, they’ll share their knowledge and passion for this part of the world.
Packrafting is new to Patagonia, and your local guide team is excited to explore with you.
